London Manhole Cover

A concept piece that was used for personal learning and practice.

This project originated because I was keen to expand my capabilities with ZBrush increase efficiency in my workflow.  The cobblestones provided an excellent feature to practice quick layouts of repetitive objects and then comeback in and edit the final arrangement  to produce a more natural look.  I approached the manhole cover in a new (to myself) way by taking an existing reference photo and editing it to produce a suitable black and white image that could then be used as an alpha for masking and extruding geometry within ZBrush. As a result I had a suitably detailed piece of geometry that I could then use to polypaint and practice texturing methods.

My current learnings from after this piece would have me utilize other methods such as displacement maps and procedurally generated materials to achieve the same look but far more efficiently - however that is the beauty of learning!
